Governors Hall, the new East Tennessee State University residence hall complex, was dedicated Oct. 26.
Opened in August, the new facility houses 542 students and is home to freshmen and upperclassmen, including some students participating in University Honors, Roan Scholars, Intercollegiate Athletics and bluegrass as well as many other programs.
Constructed at a cost of $20 million, the complex encompasses some 129,000 square feet. The central wing stands six floors high, and the double rooms each have a private bath and wiring for data access, cable and telephones.
Among the amenities offered in the building are a lobby with a fireplace, a grand stairway, two laundry rooms, a large program room, a classroom/media room and many study areas.
A patio provides outdoor enjoyment, and residents participate in the university’s recycling program.
The name “Governors Hall” honors former Tennessee governors who had residence halls named for them on campus, but those buildings have been, or will be, razed to make room for new construction.
Gordon Browning and Alfred Taylor halls were removed to provide an area for the Charles C. Sherrod Library; Frank Clement and Buford Ellington halls were taken down to accommodate the new Governors Hall; and Prentice Cooper Hall and Jim Nance McCord Hall will be demolished to provide the site for a new ETSU apartment complex.
Fisher & Associates of Greeneville and McCarty Holsaple McCarty, Inc. of Knoxville designed the complex, and Blaine Construction of Knoxville was the contractor.
