The Knitting Club is a fairly new addition to the list of ETSU’s student organizations, and in fact, the club’s founder, Beth Presswood, didn’t even start knitting until last Christmas.
Presswood said she picked up knitting “because I always do some sort of craft as a Christmas present.”
After initially starting on loom knitting, Presswood moved on to needle knitting after taking a class at Sycamore Shoals, and then began sharing the craft with classmates.
“It started out with mostly microbiology majors,” she said. Currently the club has between 10 to 15 members, but new knitters are always welcome to join.
The Knitting Club meets every second Friday in the Culp Center Atrium.
A meeting usually consists of learning a new technique, introducing new knitters to the craft, or simply helping one another with an individual project.
And in case you’re unsure as to what or needles to buy, don’t worry; Pressman said she always brings an extra set of needles and some practice yarn to every meeting.
This semester the knitters have decided to work together on a charity project and knit hats for premature babies at the Johnson City Medical Center, which they will be donating later this month.
Members also work on individual projects as well such as made such as purses, a sweater and stuffed animals. But a lot of the items the member make are clothing, such as scarves, mittens and socks.
If you’re interested in delivering some handmade Christmas gifts to your friends and family, adding to your own winter wardrobe, or participating in a charity project, drop by the Knitting Club’s next meeting on Friday, Nov. 16 at 3:30 p.m.
You can also contact the group through ETSU’s student organization page under special interest, or visit the Facebook site “ETSU Knitters.
