Scholarships are free money that doesn’t have to be repaid, unlike Stafford loans. ETSU offers a bunch of scholarships and it’s not too late to apply for next year.
The university has a very basic application process. There is a long list of scholarships, but only one application is required.
The form may be picked up in the scholarship office on the second floor of the Culp University Center or printed off the web.
The scholarship Web site has a search tool to let students know what scholarships they qualify for.
The form must be in the office by March 1. Postmarking by this date does not count. After applications are turned in, they are sent to selection committees to decide the winners.
As for tips to filling out that “winning” application, ETSU Scholarship Office Director Kathy Feagins advises students to “make their applications neat and readable. Also, make yourself look good. Don’t be humble.”
Giving advice for those trying to hold on to the Hope Scholarship, Feagins said, “Most students lose it because of grades. They need to go to class and take advantage of the resources on campus such as the Writing and Communication Center, Math Lab and tutoring services.”
Another tip is to fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible to avoid delays.
Feagins also said that there are other scholarship opportunities available. Students should check with their department chair or advisor about specific departmental scholarships that are available. Also, Web sites such as www.fastweb.com and www.wiredscholar.com offer credible scholarship search engines.
Essays aren’t the only thing scholarship committees are concerned with.
Several scholarships are available for those with creative movie making skills such as “The Christopher Video Contest” in which a five-minute video is submitted interpreting the theme “one person can make a difference.”
Another scholarship from the National Geographic Channel wants original short films or public service announcements under the theme “what you do counts.”
Most importantly, students need to try to get any application in before the deadline. It eliminates the rush and will result in a better chance for winning the award.
