Seven ETSU students have been selected for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Amanda Bunch is a senior majoring in human services, with a minor in early childhood education. She is the daughter of Richard and Nancy Bunch of Chattanooga, and a member of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority.
In addition, Bunch attended the organization’s District Leadership Conference the past two years. She has served as vice president of administration for the Panhellenic Council, as a senator in the ETSU Student Government Association, and as a member of the Order of Omega honorary society. She also volunteers in the child life department of the Johnson City Medical Center.
Elana Gulas is the daughter of George and Cindy Gulas of Chattanooga. She is a senior majoring in marketing communications.
One of the founding members and president of the Initiative for Clean Energy, Gulas led the student organization to help create the campus recycling program, with assistance from a Student Allocations Committee grant.
As vice president and as secretary of Volunteer ETSU, Gulas helped coordinate many events, including the Hunger Banquet and the Salvation Army Angel Tree.
In addition, she is a member of Kappa Delta social sorority, Alpha Sigma Lambda and Delta Sigma Pi honorary societies, and the Honors College.
Kristie Nicole Hilton of Blountville is a senior majoring in nursing. Among her honorary society affiliations are Omicron Delta Kappa leadership organization, the National Scholars Honor Society, and Golden Key International.
She was elected activities director of the Student Nurses Association for the past year and class secretary for the nursing class graduating in December 2008.
Currently, Hilton is working on her honors thesis, “Causes of Stress and Effective Coping Mechanisms in College Nursing Students.”
She is the wife of Brandon Hilton and the daughter of Gary and Robin Glazis. Her sister, Jennifer DiRuocco, resides in Omaha, Neb.
Hayley Keller, daughter of David and Laura Keller of Chattanooga, is a senior and a nursing student. Keller has been involved with the Student Advisory Council of the College of Nursing, serving as her class president for the past two years.
A member of Kappa Delta social sorority for four years, Keller has held the position of vice president for public relations. During 2007, she was ETSU’s Homecoming Queen, and she was named Outstanding Greek Woman of the Year.
An Honors-in-Discipline nursing student, Keller is currently completing her thesis.
She volunteers with the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Affiliate and Johnson City’s Children’s Hospital in preparation for a career in pediatrics.
Jessyca Newman, a resident of Elizabethton and a senior majoring in criminal justice and political science, will enter law school next fall.
Newman was chosen as the attorney general of the ETSU Student Government Association and held the same office in the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legis-lature when it met in Nashville.
A member of the Golden Key International and Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honoraries, she is among those tapped for Phi Kappa Phi national honorary.
In addition, Newman is president of Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization. She is the daughter of Pat Guinn of Erwin and Charles Newman of Lincolnton, North Carolina.
Phillip Ross is a junior majoring in accounting and the son of Bob and Carolyn Ross of Kingsport.
Selected for the prestigious ETSU Roan Scholars Leadership Program, he has participated in several judicial bodies at ETSU, including the Residence Hall Judicial Board; Student Government Judicial Board, which he served as Chief Justice; and the University Judicial Board.
A peer adviser in the College of Business and Technology, Ross was elected vice president of Alpha Lambda Delta honorary society.
In addition, Ross serves with the ETSU President’s Pride service honorary and as an Admissions Ambassador, giving tours of the campus to visitors. After graduation, he plans to attend law school, with the ultimate goal of joining the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General (JAG) program.
William Stephanos, a senior, has an interdisciplinary mixture of interests, including international studies, art and design, and broadcasting. Thanks to an undergraduate research grant, he spent two months filming in China and Tibet.
Stephanos is co-founder and secretary of STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition, and former president of ETSU’s Student Metal Art Connoisseurs.
At present, Stephanos is working on iTunes podcasts in cooperation with Apple Inc., and he serves as the podcast administrator for the ETSU Department of Art and Design and the Southern Appalachian International Film Festival.
He and his wife, Mira Gerard, reside in Johnson City with their sons, Dembé, 14, and Silas, 12. His parents are Joan Cazinha of Tucson, Ariz., and Thomas Stephanos of Reading, Pennsylvania.
