A two-goal second period was all the ETSU men’s soccer team needed as they downed Mars Hill 3-0 Saturday in an exhibition match at Summers-Taylor Stadium.”This was a very good game for us,” said head coach Scott Calabrese. “We performed up to our expectations and passed very well.

“For us, it was important to have a shutout and to convert our chances, and we did both of those things tonight.”

The two teams played three 30-minute periods as the Buccaneers outshot the Lions in the game 26-3 and had a 6-1 advantage in corners.

Sophomore James Holt had the lone save of the game for ETSU.

“I am very pleased with the way out team came out and approached the game mentally,” Calabrese said. “The work rate was there, and we are making very good progress in the preseason. If we continue to improve at the rate we have been improving, we will have a very strong season.”

Sophomore Jaron Westbrook put the Bucs up 1-0 in the 48th minute as he knocked in a pass from Tim Nixon.

Minutes later ETSU was back at it again as Theo Yang collected a pass from Nixon and placed a shot past the Mars Hill keeper from just inside the 18-yard box to put the Buccaneers up 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

ETSU added a third goal in the 70th minute as Ryan Campbell blasted the rebound from a Yang shot into the back of the net.

The Bucs’ next game will be Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. as they host Appalachian State.
