Family, friends and good food. This is what a lot of people think of when it comes to Thanksgiving – or any other holiday for that matter.
Holidays are great, but I want to talk about tradition.
I spent this Thanksgiving sitting outside Best Buy in Knoxville with my cousins and a lot of close-minded people think that it was a bad thing to do because I wasn’t celebrating Thanksgiving the “right” way.
First off, Thanksgiving is not about where you spend it, it is about whom you spend it with.
Did I sit around a table with my family this year or watch the traditional football game? No, I didn’t.
I sat outside with my cousins and we got to spend a lot of quality time together.
Times like this are rare, and I want to take advantage of it the best way possible.
In my opinion, when everyone is older and on their own, nobody is going to remember the football games. What will be remembered is our time playing football in the Best Buy parking lot, freezing our butts off and the looks on their faces when our parents brought us Thanksgiving dinner.
This was their first time out on a holiday like this, and I knew they were having a blast.
In most families, when people get older and move away, they become more like distant acquaintances, who only see each other at either weddings, funerals or reunions.
I don’t want that.
My cousins and I will always be very close and it is because of the memories we make such as our little Thanksgiving tradition.
What really disturbs me though is that people are so close-minded that they can’t see the good in this.
I think that is what is wrong with our society.
Since I am not doing what everyone else is doing, then I am wrong?
Everyone needs to celebrate holidays their own way and make the best of it.
The moral here is to make your own memories . whether it is a crazy tradition like sitting outside of Best Buy or something more laid back, it’s your choice.
Life is short, and when you are older you are going to remember the good ole’ times you had, and nothing can take that away.
