For some, it’s a hurtful symbol that should be banned, for some, a symbol of Southern pride; others think it’s a symbol of rebellion while some just don’t know what to think about the Confederate battle flag. Join us as we open the lines of communication to shed some light on the subject and its varying connotations with guest lecturer, Dr. Cameron Lippard, Appalachian State University.

The sociologist specializing in race and ethnic relations in the United States, will present his research on the subject focusing on the flag as a confusing symbol and its estranged past.

Dr. Lippard will also share the variety of opinions he found while interviewing civil war re-enactors, state flag protesters in Georgia, minorities, college students, and even members of the Ku Klux Klan.

An audience-led discussion will follow the presentation.

The presentation be Tuesday, March 30 and will begin at 3 p.m. It will be held in the auditorium of the D.P. Culp University Center. For more information, contact Lettee Harris at 439-6633 or e-mail mcstaff@etsu.edu.
