Last fall ETSU received a stimulus package of funding from the government. Using part of the funds, the university created the International Students Academic Merit Scholarship Program. “By recruiting international students to come to ETSU we enhance the campus, enhance the learning, and enhance the interaction between American students and international students,” said D.J. Jessee, marketing director for the program and a member of the scholarship committee.

Jessee said the program generates revenue through international students’ tuition. The scholarship will make it easier for international students to come to ETSU by paying for 50 percent of out-of-state tuition and maintenance fees. To receive the scholarship students from around the world must be admitted to ETSU, obtain a student visa, and demonstrate outstanding academic achievement.

American students will benefit from the program by learning more about the cultures and lifestyles of the international students, said Jessee, who is excited about the doors the program will open.

Coming to America for an education has not always been possible because of the cost and lack of opportunities. The scholarship will make ETSU an attractive option for students worldwide.

“When looking to come to America for an education there are several things students look for including whether or not the university is accredited or not, the cost of tuition, and the cost of living,” Jessee said. “The International Students Academic Merit Scholarship Program will make ETSU a very appealing option to people throughout the world.”

The program was met with open arms from international students on campus. These students wish the scholarship had been available when they enrolled at ETSU.

“Everyone in China wants to come to America to get an education,” said Yaqing Mi, a junior business major from China. “Most Chinese people can’t afford the full cost of tuition. The scholarship program will create endless opportunities for people back in China.”

The program benefits the countries that the international students come from, said Maria Costa, director of international student programs.

Costa said the students living in America not only get an education, but they also learn many things from American society that will allow them to be successful when they return home.

“Many international students return to their home countries after completing their education in America and obtain jobs of leadership and power,” said Costa.

Jessee said the program is designed to help the university. International students help the university accomplish its mission to increase student retention and graduation rates.

Jessee said when international students make a commitment to come to America for an education they are dedicated to graduating and receiving their degree.

The scholarship is available for new degree-seeking international students. The financial aid is good for eight semesters for undergraduate students. Students seeking a master’s degree can use the scholarship for a maximum five semesters. Doctoral students can get the scholarship for eight semesters. The scholarship can be used for summer school.
