While most summer session students were breathing a sigh of relief after final exams and looking forward to some time off before fall semester classes began, two graduating seniors were pinning on the gold bars of a new U.S. Army lieutenant and looking ahead to serving our nation in their first assignment as Army officers. Second Lieutenants David Frye and Coby Roberts, both August ETSU graduates, became the Army’s newest officers during a commissioning ceremony that took place in the East Tennessee Room of the Culp Center, on August 16. With numerous family members, friends, and members of the ETSU community in attendance, Lieutenants Frye and Roberts took the traditional commissioning oath, exchanged a first salute, and recited the Soldier’s Creed as a reminder of why they’ve chosen to serve. First Lieutenant Josh Frye (ETSU ’09), a former Buccaneer Battalion ROTC Cadet now stationed in Vilseck, Germany, and deployed to Afghanistan as a Military Police officer, was able to call in via satellite phone to congratulate his brother.

Both new lieutenants will receive their initial assignments later this month. For more information about ETSU Army ROTC, contact the Military Science Department at 439-5291/4269.
