Dear Editor,This is in response to Ms. Brittany Shope’s Viewpoint piece on the mosque controversy.

I’d like to address the unprofessional manner in which the paper allows the piece to be written.

Typically, I would expect a paper to allow its writers to share their opinions, and there is nothing wrong with that.

But I’m not sure how professional it is as a paper to allow someone who is a sports writer to address political issues, especially when her opening line is, “Religion is one of the least important aspects of my life.”

Immediately the credibility of this political/religion piece is non-existent.

This is not an attack on Ms. Shope’s opinion but rather an open statement on the lack of professionalism shown in allowing this piece to print.

I believe all people are allowed their opinions, and I have my own.

But even a high school journalism class wouldn’t have allowed a piece to print when its opening line discredits the message.

Ms. Shope, whether I disagree or agree with you isn’t important. I’d like to ask you to continue writing.

Please, be careful not to let the editors allow you to become the scapegoat to their editorial/proofreading failures. Best of luck with future writings.
