The Student Government Association convened Tuesday to discuss legislation, a student survey and basketball. They debated passing Legislation SSR-102-10, and talked about the student survey scheduled for Oct. 20-21, which will allow students to voice their opinions about the university.
Another issue concerned who should be considered for the spring concert, which will feature a country artist.
The two key points in the meeting surrounded advertising possibilities for Buccaneer basketball games and how to make games more exciting and “worthwhile” for fans.
Sara Hacker, athletic marketing and promotions coordinator, spoke to SGA about ideas she has for keeping ETSU basketball fans excited.
“I’m here to talk about increasing the game-day atmosphere and student attendance at basketball,” Hacker said.
Hacker spoke to SGA about game and seasonal advertisement, to which Hacker said it was something she was working on, even though there are regulations.
Regarding putting signs up around campus and making information more visible to the students on game days, Hacker said, “There are guidelines we have to follow.”
Hacker was very adamant about the issue of not having enough students going to the games, especially for a school which has one of the top basketball programs in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
“My thing is that I want something that you guys will want to come to,” Hacker said.
Some of the ideas Hacker received from SGA included the idea of putting banners on the ledge outside of the Culp Center, using the ETSU homepage for students to see when there is a game happening while they are using computers on campus or off campus, as well as many other ideas for consideration.
“It’s pretty obvious our major sport is basketball,” Hacker said. “The men coming off the back-to-back Atlantic Sun Championships and the women doing it as a three-peat.”
Even with last year’s success of the men’s team, Hacker said the team is expected to be even better than previous years.
“Coach Bartow is saying this could be the best team he has had in 10 years,” Hacker told SGA.
SGA stressed the importance of social media in a ‘facebook generation’ and how to get the word out regarding basketball games.
“We do need to concentrate on finding more friends on facebook,” Hacker said.
She said right now the staff accepts people who request to be friends.
“They need to start going out and finding people, like you guys, who are leaders and will come out and bring your parties with you.
