A love story like no other, “My Name is Memory” tells the story of a love between one man and one woman, who over centuries of re-birth, fall in love with one another throughout each of their many lives. Written by New York Times-bestselling author Ann Brashares and published by the Penguin Group, “My Name is Memory” is a 336-page novel that was released as a hardback in June of 2010.
“My Name is Memory,” ranging from $15 to $25 in stores, is the second adult novel by Brashares who is best known for her young adult series “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.”
The first in what Brashares plans to be a trilogy, “My Name is Memory” is described in the book’s jacket as “a magical story that changes the way we understand the world and proves the power and endurance of a love that is meant to be.”
The novel is narrated by its two main characters, Daniel and Sophia, two souls who throughout their many lives, managed to always find one another.
Daniel is both blessed and cursed with the ability to remember each of his lives as he is continuously born again after death.
From ancient Northern Africa and Crete to England during World War I, Daniel finds his beloved Sophia and body after body, century after century, is faced with the daunting task of trying to jar her memory as she does not have the gift of memory that he has.
There are constant obstacles that keep Daniel and Sophia apart throughout the many years. Threatening the torn-apart couple the most is a jealous, vengeful man named Joaquim who was once Sophia’s husband and Daniel’ s brother.
Like Daniel, Joaquim remembers everything as he navigates from one life to another.
Despite the tragedies and sometimes the continents that keep them apart, Daniel always finds his way to Sophia.
Each time that they are reunited, they must acclimate themselves to their new names, faces and lives.
Once, she is Daniel’ s sister-in-law. Later, she is his nurse. At some point, she is even old enough to be his grandmother.
The beauty in Brashares tale is in its theme: Love transcends time, body and soul.
The link between Daniel and Sophia is forever broken and re-formed and this bond is a reminder to us all that love is worth fighting for, heartbreak is worth living through.
“My Name is Memory” is a love story that both adult and young adult audiences will find enchanting and inspiring. Brashares introduces us to a new world in which fate and destiny are more than just fanciful ideas.
She writes this novel like all of her others – with passion and with tender care.
Her characters are kindred spirits and as the reader, we are drawn into the world that she’ s created with her words.
Brashares’ novel ends on a cliffhanger, leaving readers without the kind of closure they might desire.
Readers will be comforted to know that at least two more follow-up novels will be released in the future and the love story of Daniel and Sophia will live on not only forever in their world, but for two more novels in ours.
