The Basler Center for Physical Activity will be hosting its annual ETSU Homecoming 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk on Sunday, Nov. 14. The race and walk are open to both ETSU students with an ID as well as the general public. All proceeds from the event will go to support Habitat for Humanity, an organization that enlists volunteers to help build homes for families in need. Representatives for Habitat for Humanity will have tables set up at the event.
“The event is a fundraiser with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity,” says Adam Knobloch, intramural sports coordinator at the CPA. “Registration is a small $5 fee for students with an ID and a $10 fee for the general public. Not only does the money go directly to Habitat for Humanity but if you’re participating in the Homecoming competition, you also get points.”
The event usually draws around 150 to 200 people and all attendees have the option of running the 5K or walking 1 mile.
“Overall, this event is open to people of all fitness levels,” says Knobloch. “Last year we split the race and the walk into two separate events but this year we’re doing them at the same time.”
Registration and the start time and location are the same for both runners and walkers. The 5K course will wind through the ETSU campus while the walkers will split from the runners early on to circle around the soccer stadium and back toward the CPA.
“Whether you’re running or walking, we want you to come out and participate,” says Knobloch. “Every turn of each course will have a staff person giving direction. Whether you run the 5K or walk the mile, just do it at your own comfort level.”
The top three males and females from each age group to finish the race first will win medals while the overall male and female winners will receive a trophy.
T-shirts will be given to the first 75 to register for the race.
The 5k Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk is Sunday, Nov. 14 with registration from 12:30- 1:15 p.m. and the race and walk beginning at 1:30 p.m.
