Mahogany Jazz recording artist Kathy Kosins will be the featured artist in ETSU’s Fall Jazz at the Culp on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium. Also appearing will be ETSU Jazz Program alumnus Justin Stanton with The Jazz Doctors. Both Kosins and Stanton will perform with both the ETSU Jazz Combo under the direction of Martin Walters and the ETSU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. David Champouillon.

Kosins, an ASCAP award-winner, is known for her “eclectic musical palette that expands the rich history of jazz,” according to her biography on her website (www.kathykosins.com).

Born and raised in Detroit during the Motown era, she began singing and arranging background vocals for producer Don Was in the early 1980s, and she soon became a sought-after session singer. She later recorded and toured as a vocalist with Was (Not Was).

Earlier this year, Kosins decided to take a different approach to releasing music to the public.

Rather than producing a CD once every few years, she now releases singles quarterly under the new Mahogany Digital label. These singles are songs to which audiences have responded well during live concerts, and this method gives her “the freedom to create and record on a natural timeline that corresponds with fan demand and tour schedules.”

Kosins has recorded and performed with many noted jazz and R&B artists, including Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, Jon Ellis, Cyrus Chestnut, Tamir Handelman, Jesse Davis and many others.

During the Fall Jazz at the Culp concert, Stanton will join popular regional jazz band The Jazz Doctors, comprised of musicians who have individually established longtime careers as performers and recording artists.

The band, which plays all styles of jazz from straight-ahead jazz-rock to Latin, appears at jazz festivals and special events, and is the house band at several venues. Members include Dick Davis, saxophone; Martin Walters, bass; Dr. Rande Sanderbeck, percussion; and Dr. David Champouillon, trumpet/flugelhorn and band leader.

Admission to Fall Jazz at the Culp is $10 for general seating and $5 for students with ID and seniors. For tickets, more information, or special assistance for those with disabilities, contact Champouillon at (423) 439-6955 or champoui@etsu.edu.
