Dear Editor,Mark Estes in the Feb. 3 issue of ET warns of the dangers of smoking pot.
Not everyone who favors legalization of marijuana favors smoking marijuana.
Rather, while acknowledging the harm that pot smoking does, some argue that keeping about a million Americans in jail for non-violent crimes involving substance abuse also has large social consequences.
Add to this the sad fact that when two individuals are equally guilty of exactly the same crime, the white middle-class woman almost never goes to jail while the black man does time, and you have a situation which is clearly unjust.
There is something to be said for drug laws that are fairly enforced and which reduce drug use.
There is something to be said for no drug laws at all.
But there is very little to be said in favor of drug laws that are enforced ineffectually and inconsistently.
