Baritone opera singer Joshua Zink will perform on campus at Mathes Recital Hall Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Zink will be accompanied by Esther Park in performing pieces by Butterworth, Finizi and more for a night full of English art song.
Beyond opera, Zink specializes in other fields too. He is currently an assistant professor of music at Carson Newman and earned a B.M. from Bowling Green State University, D.M.A. from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and M.M. from The University of Illinois
Park has been part of ETSU’s faculty since 2015. Before this position, she completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Juilliard School and studied with renowned professor, Yoheved Kaplinsky. She has since obtained her Master’s of Musical Arts degrees, Artist Diploma and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Yale School of Music.
“Three pieces by three different composers will be performed,” Park said. “The pieces are pleasant and yet weird in some ways. There is a bit that just rubs you the wrong way, and the audience will be able to hear that in the poems by Thomas Hardy that are incorporated. There is just something somber and grotesque about the the language sung by Dr. Zink when paired with the piano. Nonetheless, the performance is very beautiful. It is a pleasure being part of this.”
Solo vocal recitals such as this are a rare opportunity to attend in this area.
“I would highly encourage anyone to come,” Park said. “It will be a nice, intimate setting of someone telling you a story. In some ways, it’s almost as if it’s musical theater.”
Tickets are free for students with ID and $10 for general admission.
