Founded by ETSU students, the Indian Student Organization holds events on campus to bring awareness to Indian culture.
ISO is open to anyone interested in Indian culture regardless of race, ethnic, religious or cultural background. The organization was founded by students who realized that there wasn’t an organization celebrating Indian culture at ETSU.
“[We] wanted to do something fun that celebrated our culture for years to come,” Tulsi Amin, council member and nursing student, said.
Last year, ISO collaborated with the International Student Association to celebrate Holi, a Hindu festival of colors celebrating the beginning of spring every March. ISO’s event was held on the Pride Walk providing education on Indian culture, traditional clothing, dancing, henna and a paint celebration that Holi is known for.
Anyone interested can find a home in ISO.
“It has definitely helped new ETSU students find friends with similar backgrounds or interests,” said Amin. “Hopefully we keep doing interesting events and attract more members.”
Upcoming events this semester include celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights marking the beginning of the year in India from Oct. 27 through Oct. 31, as well as a Bollywood movie night.
