The women’s tennis team took part in the ITA Regionals from Oct. 17 to Oct. 19. The event was held in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Bucs are coming off a big success at the Elon Fall Invitational last month.

The three-day event saw the Bucs come away with some success. Sophomore Andrea Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and sophomore Raquel Amaro (Carcas, Venezuela) shined in the main singles draw competition, making it to the second round but falling in the third. Amaro won her first match over UTC’s Jessie Young, then fell to ranked Kaitlin Staines from Tennessee in a close match at 8-6.

Larrinaga won her first match over Diana Wong from Louisville, 6-4, 6-3, and fell in the third round against Vanderbilt’s Dash Kourkina, 4-6, 7-6, (2), 6-0.

Freshman Marija Caravajel earned a win in singles play with a victory over Neal from Butler, 6-2, 6-1, while Junior Alejandro Morales (Santiago, Chile) picked up a win of her own over Maria Koo from Kentucky, 6-2. 6-3.

In doubles draw, the Bucs lost both matches. Pascual and Caravajal lost to Myers and Lys of Miami of Ohio while Morales and Amaro fell to Young and Van Hee of UTC.

The Bucs, however, bounced back in the double’s consolation, grabbing a pair of wins by Arraras and Caravajal defeating Albertson and Topalovic of APSU 8-4, and Morales and Amaro won over Letto and Fitz-Randolp of Xavier 8-5.

In singles consolation Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) picked up the only win for the Bucs beating Bruno of Cincinnati 6-0, 6-3.

“I am very confident in our team this year,” says head coach Ricardo Rojas.

The Bucs continued their season with the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational Nov. 1-3, then conclude it with the Seminole All Conference Showdown Nov. 8-10.
