The women’s basketball played their third straight road game on Monday at Greensboro, North Carolina, against North Carolina A&T. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Bucs fell to the Aggies 80-69 recording their second road loss.
Redshirt junior Micah Scheetz (Knoxville, Tennessee) ended the night with a career game high 26 points along with five assists and three steals. Sophomore Kaia Upton (Nashville, Tennessee) also recorded a double-digit game with 10 points and attributing four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Aggies got an early start with the lead, holding the Bucs 9-3. Scheetz and senior Arielle Harvey (Atlanta, Georgia) quickly turned the momentum for the Bucs with back-to-back three pointers. Upton kept the tempo for the Bucs adding points to finish with the lead in the first quarter 18-16.
Scheetz kept the momentum in the next quarter putting up seven points and giving the Bucs a 12-point lead. The Bucs maintained the lead and the drive closing out the first half with an eight point lead.
The Aggies quickly worked their way back up to the Bucs not only outscoring the Bucs 28-15 but grabbing possession of the lead, with a five-point advantage 47-42.
The Aggies quickly relinquished the lead when the Bucs’ sophomore E’Lease Stafford (Lawrence, Kansas) nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 60 in the final minutes of the game. However, the Bucs weren’t able to capture the momentum for a comeback, missing six straight baskets along with nine consecutive free throws. The Aggies took the Bucs’ mistakes and turned them into points and extended their lead to 20 points, making it too much for the Bucs to catch up.
“When you embrace the competition, that’s how you grow,” said head coach Brittney Ezell.
The Bucs return home next week inside of Brooks Gym for the first time in the 2019-20 season.
