The D.P. Culp Student Center’s Martha Street Auditorium is creating many opportunities for club, student and school sponsored events and performances.

The Mary B. Martin School of the Arts is hosting three events in the auditorium this semester.

“Since the Culp Auditorium has not been available for usage since the renovation began, the Martin School has scheduled all performances and film screenings in other locations, with performances happening primarily in churches in the region,” said Anita DeAngelis, director of the Mary B. Martin School of the Arts. “It’s been difficult for us to schedule touring companies as the technical requirements for performances have been limited without access to the Culp Auditorium.”

On March 2 at 7 p.m., they are hosting a free screening of the film “Light from Light” as part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. A Q&A with Knoxville native director Paul Harrill will follow the screening.

The story follows single mom and paranormal investigator Sheila who is contacted by recent widower Richard. He thinks his departed wife may be haunting his East Tennessee farmhouse.

The award-winning Irish quintet Goitse is expected to bring a lively and zealous performance of traditional music from Limerick, Ireland. Their second event is on March 3 at 7:30 p.m. and costs $15-20 or $5 for students.

Their final event is a free screening of the “Little Miss Westie” documentary about the lives of siblings Luca and Ren as they navigate the struggles of school, puberty and gender transitioning.

Buctainment is moving their movie nights to every Friday night at 7 p.m. On March 6, Buctainment and the Black Affairs Association are co-sponsoring a viewing of the Movie “Harriet.”

“Buctainment is really excited to have the auditorium back because that’s, historically, where they’ve had their movies,” said Alexis Petrak, coordinator of Student Activities and Organizations. “They struggled a lot with attendance with it being across campus, so I think the way the first floor is set up right now will be more conducive to people using the auditorium.”

The other movies being shown this semester are “Frozen 2,” “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Jumanji: The Next Level” and “Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.”
