On March 19, six ETSU students found out they were finalists in the 2019 Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters & Media Editors College Contest.
Finalist categories include: Online Specialized/Topic Reporting, News Story and Radio Newscast.
Kate Trabalka, Kirsty McCaughtry and Allison Winters placed as finalists in Online Specialized/Topic Reporting for their work on “Overlooked in Appalachia.” The project was an in-depth look at the opioid crisis in the Appalachian region and was overseen by Department of Media and Communication Professor Mimi Perreault. All three finalists also report with the East Tennessean.
Trabalka took a second finalist win in the News Story category for her work on “Monarch bus route drives traffic debate” for the East Tennessean.
Raina Wiseman, Jesse Denney and Jessica Dunker placed as finalists in the Radio Newscast category for their work on The ET Echo, a collaborative news show by The Edge 89.5 HD4 and the East Tennessean. Wiseman and Dunker represent the East Tennessean, while Denney represents The Edge 89.5 HD4.
Finalists have earned either a first- second- or third-place honor. While the AP College Awards are cancelled due to Coronavirus precautions, winners will be announced at a later date.
