ETSU’s women’s soccer fell to Wofford in a 1-0 Southern Conference loss at home on March 26.
Warm weather greeted the players on the field at Summers-Taylor stadium as the 1-5-1 Bucs geared up to face the 2-3-1 Wofford Terriers in a Southern Conference battle. The Bucs entered the day with a 1-3-1 overall record in Southern Conference play.
Chasing their first win since March 5, the Bucs tried to strike first. Moments into the start of the match, the Bucs found themselves in a great position early on and just missed the mark a little wide as Merrin Gilmer (Johnson City, Tennessee) took her only shot of the game from the top of the box. Wofford’s Dani Segovia soon scored the lone goal in the matchup early in the first half.
The remainder of the game was a test, as the Bucs continued to struggle to progress the ball on offense, finding eight shots — with only three of those on-goal. The team never gave up, and ETSU’s defenders kept the Bucs in contention until the final whistle.
The 11 shots from Wofford, with seven of them coming on-goal, proved to be too much as the Bucs would fall to the conference rival. Wofford kept Bucs’ goalkeeper Ashton Blair (Knoxville, Tennessee) busy for most of the afternoon — Blair wound up with six saves for the Bucs.
The team has struggled over the past month to find a groove. Troubles controlling and advancing the ball continue to plague a team with a lot of talent to offer.
The (1-6-1) Bucs were supposed to play the Furman Paladins at home on March 28, but the game was postponed due to weather and a rescheduled date has yet to be announced.
