ETSU’s Tipton Gallery featured the “Transcendence: Beyond the Normal or Physical Level” exhibit from March 22 through April 9. This exhibit features multiple artists from ETSU’s Masters of Fine Arts program. Those artists include Shanna Glawson, Gregory Smith, Laura Schroeder, Hannah Taylor, and Hanna Traynham.

“All the artwork is very beautiful,” said Whitney Royston, a student who attended the exhibition. “I really love all the colors and vivid images. It really makes me feel like I am on a journey, or rather, that I can see the journey the artists went on through each individual piece.”

The exhibit focuses on the goal of overcoming unexpected challenges and the progression from one state of consciousness into a higher realm of being. Each piece of artwork represents an attitude or idea of self-growth for the artists.

“This has been really amazing,” said Tess Whitson, another student attendee. “All of the artwork feels very personal to the artist that created it. I can see and truly understand the goal of the artists with each individual piece. I found the exhibit to be beautiful and moving, and I am so glad that I was able to come view it and feel safe, despite COVID.”

The event did not offer a formal reception event due to COVID-19 safety protocols recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and enforced by ETSU. However, those wishing to may view the art exhibition in person. Other safety protocols included the use of masks while inside the galleries, social distancing and a focus on sanitation throughout the museum.

The Tipton Gallery encouraged those attending to come in small groups. The event was free and open to the public. A virtual discussion was held April 9, with the contributing artists for the exhibition.
