On Nov. 15, the ETSU community gathered to experience the beloved tradition of holiday lights being brought to life on campus. The celebration was attended by faculty, staff and students from both University School and ETSU, as well as the spirited citizens of Johnson City.

“When they told me I was going to get to speak at the holiday lights, it was one of the things I was most excited for,” said Mason Mosier, ETSU SGA president. “This is a time, as an ETSU family, where we all come together, and we show our Buccaneer pride. We show what it is to be a part of the Buccaneer family.”

In addition to watching the lights, eventgoers were able to enjoy hot chocolate with jumbo marshmallows and spiced apple cider, visit Santa Claus, and get their photos taken with Officer Mitchell and Pepper the dog, who sported a Santa-themed outfit and festive collar. Holiday tunes were performed by the Trombone Studio, and, in addition to Mosier, an appearance was made by ETSU President, Brian Noland.

“Tonight is an evening in which we continue tradition at the University,” said Noland, “a tradition of beginning the holiday season. Most importantly, tonight is a night for family. It’s wonderful to see all aspects of the university present here tonight.”

When the long-awaited moment finally arrived, the lights were lit by Shivam Patel, who served as the Student Government Association President during the 2019-2020 school year.

“I feel like I’m in a Hallmark movie,” said Mallory Johnson, an ETSU student.

The campus was swathed in an illumination of brilliant colors, providing a moment of saccharine tranquility to conclude a year that has been filled with so much hardship.

Ultimately, being able to escape the impending weight of assignments, due dates and a conclusion of their first in-person semester in several years has made this tradition even more special for many students, as well as other members of the community, and this tradition is sure to continue for years to come.
