As a new spring semester kicks off for the Buccaneer community, the start of intramural sports season is just around the corner.
Campus Recreation has created this program for enrolled students, faculty and staff to participate in sports such as volleyball, basketball, soccer and slow pitch softball, all of which being offered this spring season.
Intramural sports allow for individuals to play a part in friendly competition surrounded by a positive environment with teams of their choosing. Playing against other members of the ETSU community, it also gives the opportunity to meet and connect with new people who possess a similar interest in sports.
Intramurals offer more than just playing involvement, with employment options open for officials and program assistants. This type of employment through the university accepts APS, Federal Work Study and Regular Work Study applicants.
For senior Walker Moncier, intramural sports have made a positive impact on his experience at ETSU. Playing several sports such as volleyball, flag football and basketball throughout his academic career, he has been introduced to many new friends and enjoys the competition brought between peers.
The main aspect of intramurals that Moncier enjoys is the chance participants are given to partake in physical activity.
“My favorite thing about playing is just keeping me active, as well as being able to play a sport,” said Moncier. “This program is one of the only ways you can stay playing sports at a competitive level if not playing for school.”
Games are scheduled Sunday through Thursday with varying times. Registration deadlines are approaching, with dates of Jan. 24 for volleyball and Jan. 31 for basketball, while later deadlines lead into March. ETSU uses IMLeagues, an online registration and scheduling system, making it easier for teams to choose dates and times that allow for game participation between competing teams.
