ETSU offers aerial dance classes to students who are looking to gain confidence and physical strength in a welcoming and encouraging environment.
Many students may not be aware of the several exciting dance classes that ETSU offers, one of which is Aerial Dance 1 (DANC 2140), a class which teaches students how to dance with aerial silks and the lyra, or aerial hoop. The class is taught by Cara Harker and is open to all students with an interest in aerial dance.
No experience is necessary for the class, and it is not only for students who are minoring in dance. Harker’s instruction is based on individual support and recognition of each student’s personal growth. Students benefit from an entirely “judgement-free zone” in her class.
Harker said that she aims to “create a safe space where people feel like they can explore.”
One of her favorite things about this class is that dancing with the aerial silks and lyra is reminiscent of childhood; climbing, swinging and hanging upside down are all parts of this dance style.
A typical class session in aerial dance consists of stretching, a light cardio warm-up to increase the heart rate and then guided practice time on the silks. Harker says that this can be a joyful and positive experience and is great for students who are looking to challenge themselves and who want to be a part of a welcoming community.
A student taking the class this semester said, “This class is really something special. It’s a neat opportunity especially since you might not have access to the equipment otherwise.”
Several of the students said that the class is helping them to gain upper body strength, confidence and motivation to exercise regularly outside of class.
Since it is a class that can count towards credit requirements for graduation, some students find this class to be more convenient and cheaper than classes that are offered outside of the university.
Aerial Dance 1 is offered in both the spring and fall sessions, so any students who are interested should keep this class in mind when planning for the next semester. Students who aren’t able to register for this class are encouraged to check out Night Owl Circus Arts in Johnson City which offers classes taught by an ETSU Dance alumna.
