The Margaret Anne Byrd Huffman Grant, sponsored by the Archives of Appalachia, is now accepting applications for 2022.

This grant is sponsored annually by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services and the Archives of Appalachia at ETSU. It offers up to $2,000 for grantees to support projects that employ the Archives of Appalachia.

Applicants are required to be either a full-time ETSU student or a current faculty member. For student applicants, a minimum GPA of 3.0 and all standard requirements necessary for admission to ETSU are needed.

If selected, recipients may also apply to future grants given they meet the criteria.

In selecting candidates for this grant, The Huffman Grant Committee will consider these components: the project is required to use materials from the Archives of Appalachia, and the project must provide a greater understanding of Appalachia. There will also be preference to projects that ease access to the digital Archives’ collections. Additionally, it is possible that the financial need for a project could be considered in the selection of recipients.

“Previous winners have used funds to pay for travel related to research development and conference presentations and pay for living expenses related to summer research in the Archives,” said Dr. Jeremy Smith, Director of the Archives of Appalachia.

There are a variety of ways this grant has supported student and faculty projects, including fees, equipment and other expenses.

More specifically, recipients have used this grant to “purchase supplies for creative projects and cover technology fees related to providing online access to Archives materials,” said Smith.

Applications are due Feb. 28, 11:59 p.m. More information regarding the grant can be found at www.etsu.edu/huffman, or by emailing the Director of the Archives of Appalachia, Dr. Jeremy Smith, at smithja14@etsu.edu.
