ETSU’s men’s tennis team went to Greenville, South Carolina, on Tuesday, April 12, to play against Furman University.
The Buccaneers swept the Paladins 6-1 overall.
The first two doubles matches were won by ETSU (6-4). The first match to finish was senior Yusuf Khamis (Cario, Egypt) and sophomore Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) against Drew Singerman and Ben Cahill. This match was followed by senior Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and freshman Juan S. Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) against Furman’s Ivan Mitric and Jamie Connel, who are ranked No. 53 in the nation.
The final doubles match to finish was played by the Bucs sophomore Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and freshman Francisco Lamas (Maracay, Venezuela) who were defeated by Furman’s James Roelofse and Emil Westling (6-4).
The first singles match to finish was won by Furman’s Connel who beat ETSU’s Khamis (6-2, 6-4).
The next five singles matches were all won by ETSU.
Badra beat Mitric (6-4, 6-2) followed by Rengifo beating Elijah Poritzky (6-4, 6-4). Next, Pernas defeated Westling (6-4, 6-3). Zabala defeated Roelofse (7-6 [7-4], 6-1). The final Buccaneer to win was Lamas who beat Singerman (6-7 [1-7], 6-3, 6-4).
Buccaneer men’s tennis is currently ranked #73 nationally with a six-game winning streak, an overall score of 16-5 and are undefeated 6-0 in their conference.
Their next game is against the #36 ranked team, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond on Saturday, April 16.
