A Shrek-tacular weekend has been yet again hosted by Dos Gatos, including themed drinks, food and fun.

“Little Shrekago” is an event hosted by Dos Gatos Coffee Bar and other downtown Johnson City, Tennessee business owners. It is a weekend of Shrek themed specials and events that has been happening since 2019.

This year, the event started on Oct. 14 and ended on Oct. 16.

“Everybody loves Shrek, so we just kind of ran with it,” said Dick Nelson, Dos Gatos’ owner. “There are great color schemes to make interesting looking snacks and drinks out of, and a lot of different interesting names and puns to use.”

Dos Gatos was inspired by Shark Week on the Discovery Channel and decided to do their own themed week. After the first Little Shrekago, Dos Gatos worked to implement other business owners in Johnson City.

Some of the businesses include Cakebuds Bakery, Lazy Lady Baking Co., Crumb Bakeshop, Holy Taco Cantina, Bebettes, Tipton’s Street Pub and Atlantic Ale House.

Before other local businesses became involved, Dos Gatos held a screening of the movie each year with trivia and prizes. Although, this year on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m., Atlantic Ale House hosted a film screening of Shrek outside of the brewery.

“We have really creative baristas, they come up with really interesting drinks and snacks,” said Nelson.

Dos Gatos created multiple themed drinks for the event. Some of them included the Fiona Fizz, a melon and basil soda, the Shrekago Affogato, an ice cream and matcha mix and the Swamp Hop, a cold brew white tea with hops.

Little Shrekago allowed members of the community to come together as one to celebrate a common interest, Shrek. The event has occurred every year since 2019, except during the pandemic, and will continue to do so.

“It’s always fun to hear a bunch of people coming together and singing, ‘Hey now you’re an all-star get your game on,’” said Nelson.
