After ETSU’s annual holiday lighting ceremony on Monday, the university has created another way for the community to come together during the holiday and winter months: an outdoor, synthetic ice-skating rink.
The ETSU Office of Administration teased the announcement in a social media video on Tuesday, Nov. 16, where students urged Bucky to ask Santa for an ice skating party.
As the semester starts to wind down, students and community members will be able to enjoy the rink starting Dec. 2 at Bucky’s Blizzard Block Party. The rink will be situated in University Commons, right outside of the D.P. Culp Student Center.
“We wanted to create a fun and festive experience for our students as they head into their final exams, but we also wanted something that our entire community can enjoy throughout the holidays and into January,” said Jeremy Ross, ETSU chief operating officer. “The ice-skating rink is the latest addition to our strategic plan to enhance our grounds and outdoor activities on campus.”
The rink will open at the block party from 4-8 p.m., and open again on Saturday, Dec. 3 after the Johnson City Christmas Parade from 2-7 p.m. Hours and days will vary, but the rink will be open select times throughout December and January.
With an ETSU ID, Students, faculty and staff can pay $3 for a one-hour skating session, including skate rentals; members of the community will have $5 admission.
“Students are very excited to have a block party to conclude the last week of classes, and we look forward to welcoming members of the community for our newest grand opening,” said Mason Mosier, ETSU SGA president.
ETSU Facilities will be working to put together the 70-foot long rink ahead of the launch and plan to take it down in January. King’s Corner will have special operating hours during the event period to serve visitors coffee, hot chocolate and pastries.
