On Saturday, Feb. 18, ETSU will host Woodwind Day, previously known as Reed Day. As an annual event, students from the region are invited to campus to learn more about their instruments from professionals, college professors and college students.

Woodwind instruments such as the flute, saxophone, clarinet, oboe and bassoon will all be featured, each instrument also having a guest artist professional to educate the students.

Guest artists include Dr. Erin Cameron on clarinet, Dr. Kristin Leitterman on oboe, Dr. Stephanie Hoeckley on flute, Dr. Elissa Kana on saxophone and Kristen Smith on bassoon. The event will last about half of the day, with check-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the final concert of the day beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The participation fee for the event is $15 and includes all of the Woodwind Day events, such as performances, masterclasses and clinics, and also lunch and a t-shirt. Participants will also receive a complimentary tour of campus lead by current ETSU Department of Music students.

A very important part of the day will be the masterclasses hosted by the guest artists. A masterclass is a special type of music lesson, where the musician has a prepared-piece lesson in front of a group of people, usually consisting of their peers or other prospective students. Masterclasses are important for students to get feedback on their skills from an outside source, this time being a professional in their specific instrument. Often, this is a great time for students to receive advice that could open their mind to a certain aspect of their musical piece. They can take said advice and apply it to their future performances of the piece.

If you have questions about the event, please contact Dr. Heather Killmeyer at killmeyer@etsu.edu or contact Dr. Lisa Perry at perrylw@etsu.edu. Students and amateurs of all levels, as well as parents and band directors, are invited to attend.
