Meet Henrik Guenther, an ETSU senior soccer defender from Guetersloh, Germany. His speed and quick thinking on the pitch make him a powerhouse under pressure. From his years of experience to his skills as a formidable defensive line, Guenther is a true team player.

Freshman player Sam McGee (Johnson City, Tenn.) states, “Henrik is a phenomenal worker and a real leader when it comes to training and being on the field. Good thing he’s good at soccer because when it comes to ping pong, he’s terrible. He makes up for it by being the team’s best barber.”

One thing is clear: Henrik has nothing but love for soccer and his team. He shared that some of his favorite memories come from times on and off the field with his teammates.

The #2 Defender offers his advice for young athletes starting out. “Regardless of the minutes you start out with on the field, use them to improve and listen to your coaches. They know what they’re doing,” he said, adding that he himself looks up to German soccer player Phillip Lahm.

Henrik stresses the importance of pairing soccer with a good education. As a marketing management major, he was named to the SoCon Honor Roll in fall 2022. While he admits living in the U.S. includes a few challenges (the difference in currency, credit cards, and understanding the process of college courses), he has adapted quite well.

As we look at his last season at ETSU, he shares his five-year plan. “I see myself going pro and traveling the United States with a professional team.”

Now is your chance to cheer on Henrik in his final season with the ETSU Bucs on Tuesday, Sept. 12th, against Radford at Summers-Taylor stadium.
