Students were given the opportunity to register to vote at the University Commons on Sept. 19.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, students were allowed to register to vote right on ETSU’s University Commons from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As the election is coming near, ETSU’s campus provides different opportunities to encourage students to get involved and take action with voting.

“We are hosting the second annual Civic Couch Party here on campus in honor of National Voter Registration Day. We call it a civic couch party because we are one of the states in the country where you can register to vote fully online, so you can do it from the comfort of your couch, so we’re out here with free food and t-shirts just encouraging people to participate if they’re eligible.” Nathan Farnor, coordinator of leadership and civic engagement, explained.

With cupcakes, lemonade and couches, ETSU celebrates National Voter Registration Day with September being National Voter Registration Month. Farnor took time to hand out prizes to people who registered to vote, whether it be a t-shirt or a raffle for a chance to win a TV.

Elayna Chavis, graduate assistant, explained, “So this honestly is the best way for us to get students involved within the voting process, understanding the importance to register to vote, so we have the couches. That your vote, your voice matters and just to be engaged and connected with stuff going on, and that’s our main goal.”

While the Civic Couch Party has ended, your opportunity to register to vote has not. For more information, you can check out www.etsu.edu/etsuvotes.
