Bluegrass Pythagoras, now known as Pythagoras, has been making strides as a band, with the recent wonderful opportunity to go to Nashville to attend a Bluegrass conference.
You are in for a sweet treat if you don’t know of Pythagoras. Composed of East Tennessee students: Grant Dresnok, Gracie Grossman, Joe Henson and Lexi Wagnitz, Pythagoras is a personal Bluegrass band made of relatable individuals to the student body. With three of their members in Bluegrass and the fourth being in business, they are individuals who have decided to take their passion for Bluegrass to another level.
“We were on our way back from this jam in North Carolina right when we had gotten here and were all driving in the car and were talking about making a band, and we weren’t sure what we were going to name it. Then we remembered this video that one of our professors posted on YouTube of this famous country promoter named Carlton Haney with this other Bluegrass guy Jimmy Martin talking about how Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician, pretty much laid the grounds of Bluegrass music with the different octaves… most of this isn’t true but we thought it would be funny for our band name,” Grant Dresnok and Gracie Grossman shared.
Becoming friends a year ago when they started school, they quickly learned of their shared interest in Bluegrass. Realizing their shared passion and skills, they decided to start a journey together as a band.
“We didn’t know each other before school, so we all met here and realized we all played the instruments needed for a five-piece band,” Lexi Wagnitz explained.
Joe Henson explained their most recent event, sharing, “We were at a big Bluegrass convention up in Nashville, SPBGMA, basically where a lot of different artists and groups get together and just the general community.”
They have many exciting upcoming events and trips, including a trip to Ireland at the end of the semester. From events in Johnson City to Nashville, Pythagoras is staying busy as they continue to grow in the Bluegrass world.
“We’re playing the DownHome Friday, so we’re looking forward to that. We have our friend, Lydia Hamby, and her band, opening for us, which is cool. The event is at 8 p.m. and for students, it is only 10 dollars,” said Dresnok.
“Just because you’re a full-time student doesn’t mean your career doesn’t start now. Hard work pays off no matter what it is,” Joe Henson mentioned.
Whatever your dream may be, whether it’s being in a band or starting a business, don’t hesitate to start. Pythagoras is a band of full-time students who are still putting aside time to pursue their dreams. Don’t let school keep you from following your dreams and starting your career.
