ETSU’s Sherrod Library hosts the “Rare Book and Map” event for students to get the opportunity to see rare pieces.

The annual Rare Book and Map event will take place on March 6-7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sherrod Library’s fourth floor. The event will offer an opportunity for students and community members to see some special pieces and collections in the library.

“Sherrod Library is home to many rare books as well as around 80,000 local, regional, and world maps. Our yearly rare book and map event is an opportunity to showcase those and to invite everyone to see some of the treasures that are in our collections,” said Paul Nease, information specialist for government information, law and maps.

Students and community members who attend will be able to experience rare books and maps in a hands-on setting. The rare book theme this year is Scotland and the maps showcased are all from the Appalachian region.

“Everyone will have the opportunity to get hands-on with some very old rare books and rare maps. There is something really special about seeing pieces of history in person. I will also be on hand for the whole event to answer questions about the maps and our Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, Kate Libby, will be there to answer rare book questions,” Nease said.

The event is open to all students, faculty and community members. Everyone is encouraged to stop by and view some rare finds. This event is a special way for the library to showcase its broad inventory and for students to experience something new.

“We appreciate everyone for coming and everyone who comes in the library, even if it’s just to grab a coffee at the new Dunkin’. Everyone at the library is appreciative of our campus community,” Nease said.

The library hosts events often throughout the year. The next event will be held on April 9 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sherrod Library. Other events can be found on the ETSU website.
