On Aug. 28, the Sherrod Library held their first Game Night event from 6:30-8:30 p.m. where students were invited to build community and create a fun atmosphere through games offered on the Nintendo Switch. Hosted and organized by the Library Student Advisory Committee, participants were encouraged to make connections while enjoying Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Cart provided by the committee.
Jonathan Wilson is the outreach and distance coordinator with the Department of Research and Instruction Services. Wilson oversees outreach events at the Sherrod Library and other campus locations in Sevierville, Kingsport and Chattanooga, to encourage connection and communication with distant groups, cohorts and organizations.
Advocating student involvement and community, the Game Night event is one of many initiatives taking place to stimulate student collaboration. It will be held once a month from August through December to aid students during Welcome Week and Dead Week at the end of the semester. Other events such as the Craft Hangout held every Friday from noon-1 p.m. on the library’s first floor, and the opening of the Innovation Commons located on the second floor allow there to be something for every individual interested.
“We wanted the new students, the freshmen that just moved in on campus, to have a sense of belonging,” Wilson said. “For them to have something they can enjoy and do together.”
The Library Student Advisory Committee came up with the idea after listening to what students want to see in their shared spaces. Working to serve all Bucs across campus and grade levels, the committee meets with the Deans throughout the semester and discusses where and how their budget will be used by students, for students.
Looking forward as the event grows, Wilson hopes to add onto game night and create competitions with prices available for winners, participants and more.
