ETSU’s Center for Global Engagement has partnered with the Global Career Center to offer students an internship program in Lisbon, Portugal. This is the pilot year of this program.

Students will spend nearly two weeks in January working in professional settings on projects set by their employers. There will be several opportunities for students to gain valuable skills and experience.

According to the GCC’s website, “…GCC will provide professional development workshops and opportunities as well as social and cultural experiences. Students will also have some time to explore on their own.”

Applicants need to have completed 30 credit hours or more and have a GPA of 2.75 or greater. Students will need a valid passport. Students do not need a Visa.

Applications are no longer being accepted for the program. Fifty students have submitted applications which will now be reviewed by a committee. Once the committee has chosen applicants that are appropriate, they will then be interviewed by the committee.

The committee selects students based on their interests, skills, drive and ability to represent ETSU.

From the students that remain, the GCC will place students in groups of 2 to 4 and assign them to employers in Lisbon, Portugal. Employers range from marketing firms, medical professionals, teachers and many others to offer students a wide range of professional experiences.

“This is the program’s first year. We are using it to learn more about it and hopefully continue it in the future,” shared Karla J. Leybold, assistant dean of Global Engagement and director of the Quillen Partnership Program.

With this being the first year of the program, the GCC is offering to cover much of the cost for the students. A minimum of $500 will be needed for the program this year with money for personal expenses as well.
