Since its inception in 2019, the BSCF has distributed more than $200,000 in aid, becoming a critical resource for students during emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic. As the university responds to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the fund is stepping in once again to provide relief.
“The Buccaneer Student Crisis Fund was established just before the pandemic hit,” said Dr. Michelle Byrd, associate vice president and dean of students. “Although we didn’t anticipate the global impact that was to come, this fund has proven to be an essential tool in helping students with housing, transportation and even medical needs. It was created to be there when students had nowhere else to turn, and we are seeing it do exactly that in the wake of Hurricane Helene.”
Students affected by the hurricane can apply for aid by submitting a request through the Dean of Students Office or by contacting the ETSU CARE Team. The process is designed to be straightforward, ensuring that help reaches those in need as quickly as possible. Both teams carefully review each case, ensuring that funds are allocated to students facing genuine hardships.
In the wake of this latest crisis, the BSCF is providing financial assistance for a variety of basic needs, including housing and transportation, as well as addressing specific impacts caused by the hurricane. “Students may need help with repairs, temporary housing or even just access to food and clothing,” said Byrd. “The goal is to make sure no one falls through the cracks.”
The BSCF not only supports students financially but also reflects ETSU’s deeper commitment to fostering a supportive and caring community. The university encourages students facing challenges to apply for help, and the wider ETSU community is called upon to contribute to the fund, ensuring its continued availability for future crises. The fund relies heavily on private donations, which makes community support crucial during times of widespread devastation.
For those who wish to contribute, donations can be made at https://www.etsu.edu/students/student-crisis-fund.php. This ongoing support will help ensure that ETSU students receive the assistance they need to focus on their education, even during life’s most challenging moments.
