Have you ever wished for a Trader Joe’s without the drive to Knoxville or Asheville? The “Bring a Trader Joe’s to Johnson City Campaign” led by Alexis Vance, economic development specialist for the City of Johnson City Economic Development Department, and various ETSU students, hopes to bring the beloved grocery store to the area.

“While this campaign is not affiliated with Trader Joe’s, our aim is to coordinate community and campus interest in a way that might ultimately attract Trader Joe’s to consider a location in Johnson City,” said Vance.

The campaign hosts a Facebook group titled “Bring Trader Joe’s to Johnson City TN” with 3,800 followers and 1,500 likes. The page shares information regarding Trader Joe’s and memes regarding the ever-popular store.

The Facebook group has a link in their bio to the official Trader Joe’s “Request a Store” form. By filling out this form, the Trader Joe’s corporation can see the extensive interest from the citizens of Johnson City.

Trader Joe’s is known for their flower selection, freezer meals and a multitude of house brand items.

“We prioritize engaging directly with community members and have hosted outreach events at ETSU’s Welcome Week and Main Street Days to spread the word,” said Vance. “Our next event will be at the Downtown Candy Land Christmas Tree in King Commons where supporters can connect with the campaign by visiting our decorated tree. We invite everyone to join us for the Grand Tree Lighting on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m.”

ETSU students are gaining valuable work experience from the campaign and the commitment to community-engaged learning. “The students and I are inspired by the enthusiasm the community has shown as this project gains momentum, and we are grateful for the continued support,” said Vance. “We kindly ask the community to remain patient and optimistic as we continue our efforts.”
