This past Monday, the ETSU Buccaneers basketball squad started their season against the Newberry College Wolves. This was the first game of the young season, the Bucs were able to cap off a double point 72-51 victory.

Looking optimistic with a 1-0 record so far, the Bucs were able to get a good jump on the season. Thanks to in part by stand out athletes such as seniors Quimari Peterson (Gary, Ind.) and Jaden Seymour (Charlotte, N.C.) would combined make 36 of the 72-points scored in the contest.

The Bucs would come out quite hot, leading the Wolves by a score of 44-25 at the half. However, with all underdogs, Newberry was able to make some strong halftime adjustments, Newberry would close the first half deficit significantly. Despite the strong second half, the Bucs would prove to be too much for the Wolves, ultimately outscoring them 28-26 in the second quarter.

With this win, the Buccaneers were able to come closer to finding out what works best for the team. Shooting just a .222 average of three pointers, and a .423 average on field goals, the Bucs, even while scoring 72 in the victory, still have plenty of room to improve upon before the meat and potatoes of the season begins.

Coming into just his second season of leading Buccaneer basketball, Head Coach, Brooks Savage, brings in a record of 20-17, 10 of which were won at home. Coach Savage comes from a long line of successful coaches, following former ETSU head coach Steve Forbes to Wake Forrest University, before returning to the Appalachian Highlands just a season ago, Savages standards are still hold a high mountain to climb that the Bucs are priming themselves to prove worthy, reading to compete more and more. ETSU Basketball returns this Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. against Eastern Kentucky inside Freedom Hall.
