ETSU softball returned home in victory Tuesday night after a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb.
The Bucs came off a loss to Campbell and were looking to go back to winning ways. In the first game, ETSU seemed to be the same team who lost to Campbell and were on track to lose again, going down by two early on.
Kelsey Chernak initiated the ETSU comeback with a single and returned to home base two batters later with Alex Everett. The Lady Bucs strung together a six run unanswered streak in response to Campbell’s first two runs and took the lead at 6-2.
However, the Bulldogs wouldn’t go down easy as they once again had a six run streak of their own. With the score at 8-6, ETSU knew they needed to respond to stay in this game. The Bucs scored late in the game to achieve victory in the first match and boost confidence for the second.
ETSU continued to put together a strong offensive showing as they put up a quick three run lead early.
The Bucs then went on to score six more to lead 8-2.
ETSU dominated the game and was rewarded with a victory. Bucs’ pitcher Whitney Leon finished the game strong with a career high, striking out seven batters in six innings.
If ETSU can continue a winning streak, this could start a trend that would prove very beneficial to the Bucs.
They go this weekend to Greenville, North Carolina, to participate in the East Carolina Tournament, and if they are able to perform like they did against Gardner-Webb, then the tournament will prove to be more than successful.
These two wins are the first of the season for the Bucs, and this brings their overall record to 2-4.
