‘Acapella, Unplugged!’
Greyscale, ETSU’s premier vocal ensemble, has a flair for pop and jazz and will perform with The Swashbucklers (ETSU’s student-run male vocal ensemble) and Harmonium (ETSU’s student-run female vocal ensemble) at 8 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 21, at the Acoustic Coffeehouse in downtown Johnson City. Greyscale is made up of 12 students — six men and six women — who sing unaccompanied by any instruments other than their own voices. For this concert only, they go completely “unplugged,” performing without the aid of microphones. Music fans will not want to miss this rare opportunity. The event is free for students with ID, and general admission is $5.
‘Nandito na Ako’ exhibit at Tipton Gallery
The ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries present the art exhibit “Nandito na Ako” (which translates to English as “I’m Here Now”). “Nandito na Ako” will be on display at Tipton Gallery from now until Oct. 28. The exhibit is presented at this time in recognition of Filipino Heritage Month and features work from nine emerging Chicago-based Filipinx artists. The participating artists include Cheryl Acuña, Jerico Domingo, Tristan Espinoza, Anna Liza Evangelista, Kyrstin Rodriguez, Craig Stamatelaky, Tewosret Vaughn, Vi Viray Bautista and Lorén Ibach. Bautista and Ibach are also co-curating the exhibit.
Dr. Eric Avery, Artist Talk
Presented by the Mary B. Martin School of the Arts, artist Dr. Eric Avery will give a lecture at ETSU on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. in Rogers-Stout Hall, room 102. The talk is being given in conjunction with ETSU’s FL3TCH3R exhibit, which Avery is the juror of this year. He is also a renowned printmaker and recently retired physician. With his artwork, he focuses on issues of public health, human rights abuse, HIV/AIDS, death, sexuality and the body. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture at the Reece Museum from 6-7 p.m. The FL3TCH3R Exhibit will be on display at the Reece Museum until Dec. 16.
Fun Movie Friday: ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’
In celebration of Halloween weekend, Buctainment will present their annual screening of the 1975 cult classic film “Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Friday, Oct. 28 on the Cave Patio at the D.P. Culp Center. Directed by Jim Sharmon, “Rocky Horror Picture Show” follows a young couple, Brad (played by Barry Bostwick) and Janet (played by Susan Sarandon), as a flat tire leaves them stranded at a creepy mansion during a stormy night. Of course, this scary atmosphere soon changes when they realize the head of the house is the transvestite scientist from Transylvania, Dr. Frank-N-Furter (played by Tim Curry). ETSU’s screening of the film is sure to be lively and interactive, so come ready to “do the time warp again.”
‘FACE IT: Reimagining Contemporary Portraits’
“FACE IT: Reimaging Contemporary Portraits” is a photography exhibit currently on display at ETSU, brought to campus by ETSU’s Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries, in conjunction with the Mary B. Martin School of the Arts. “FACE IT” will be on display at Slocumb Galleries now until Oct. 28 as well as at the Reece Museum until Nov. 22. The exhibit features work by many well-known photographers, including, Elizabeth Bick, Barbara Bosworth, Alejandra Carles-Tolra, Elinor Carucci, Lois Conner, Carlos Diaz, Jess Dugan, Marc Elliot, Anne Fishbein, Emmet Gowin, Nancy Hellebrand, David Hilliard, Joe Johnson, ETSU faculty member Mike Smith and several others.
