ETSU senior Gustavo Gomez, junior Roberto Fernandez and sophomore Marcos Pavlovich won their respective flight championships at the Clemson University Invitational in Clemson, S.C.
Gomez lost the first two matches in flight one, before winning three straight matches and claiming the chapionship by defeating Ryan O’Keefe of Georgia Southern, 6-1, 6-1.
Pavlovich lost one set in winning five straight matches, including the flight three championship over Florian Scheidat, also of Georgia Southern, 6-2, 7-4.
Fernandez lost his first match before winning four straight, culminating with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the flight five championship over Ule Eischlebieger of Georgia Southern.
In flight two, sophomore Pablo Sahagun went 1-3, falling in his final match to Petr Wawrzyniak of Tennessee Tech, 6-0, 7-6. In flight four, senior Juan Yanuzzi went 2-2, falling in his final match to Luis Aguerrevere, also of Tennessee Tech 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Antonio Bugge and sophomore Francisco Diaz both went 0-2 at flight six singles.
Freshman David Poole went 0-2 in flight seven singles.
The ETSU doubles tandems of Gomez and Sahagun, Yannuzzi and Fernandez, Pavlovich and Poole, and Diaz and Bugge all dropped matches to teams from Charleston Southern, Florida A&M and Georgia.
The Buccaneer men’s tennis team returns to action at 9 a.m. on Friday when they host VMI at the ETSU Tennis Center.
