The magic of college basketball is that a team like this could catch fire, win four in a row this weekend, and wind up as the Cinderella darlings of the NCAA Big Dance. The Catamounts do bring momentum into the SoCon gathering, having shocked UNC-G 63-58 in their final regular season suaree. If they slip past The Citadel, which they nearly did Jan. 8 in an overtime heartbreaker, they draw the Spartans again on Friday.
Those are high hopes, however, for a team that finished dead last in scoring offense and next-to-last in scoring defense.
To pull any more upsets, the Catamounts must rely upon a devil of a threesome. Cory Largent is the league’s sixth-leading scorer (15.7 ppg), Willie Freeman the No. 6 rebounder (7.3 rpg), and Casey Rogers (4.5 apg) the sixth-best distributor.
