ETSU baseball, (4-10, 1-2) lost three games out of four this weekend beginning on Thursday when they met the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and fell,8-1.
Then the Bucs traveled to Patriot’s Point Field in Charleston, S.C., to play a series with the College of Charleston, (9-6, 2-1), of which they captured only one victory in game two.
On Wednesday, Tennessee’s pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts and UT’s Chris Burke slugged his fourth home run of the season as the Vols extended their winning streak to five games with an 8-1 victory.
UT Senior Will Curtiss (1-0) picked up his first career win after pitching two shutout innings in relief of starter Justin Parker, who allowed one run in four innings.
Parker recored seven strikeouts in his first start of the season.
Friday was a little easier on the Bucs as they lost 5-4 against Southern Conference member College of Charleston.
Cougar Jasha Balcom had three hits while teammates Greg Alden, Nick Orlandos and Mitch Miggenburg added two each, pacing COC’s 12-hit attack against ETSU.
Nathan Copeland, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI’s, blasted a two-run homer to right feild in the sixth inning cutting the Cougar lead to two.
Matt Hallett’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth innning scored Brett Spivey, whom had reached on an earror.
ETSU used a wild pitch and an RBI single from Copeland to cut the advantage to one in the eighth inning for the final margin.
Robby Milner picked up the win allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and nine strikouts over 7 1/3 innings pitched.
Andy Hutchings recorded his fourth save of the season allowing an unearned run with two strikeouts over the final innings.
ETSU’s Josh Kite suffered the loss surrendering four runs on 10 hits over five innings.
In game two on Saturday, ETSU’s Kirk Keithley had a two- run single and pitcher Reid Casey scattered seven hits while going the distance as the Bucs edged COC, 3-2.
ETSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Keithley led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Chad Boruff’s single to right.
The Bucs extended their lead to 3-0 in the third when Keithley singled to left scoring Brandon Cross and Andy Baxter.
Charleston cut the margin to 3-1. In the eighth, when with one out, Spivey doubled to center, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Orlandos.
The game was delayed 47 minutes in the top of the eighth inning because of rain.
Charleston threatened in the ninth and came within 90 feet of tying the game.
Pinch hitter Hank Stapleton doubled to right center leading off the inning and scored when John McCarty’s two-out double hit high off the wall in center field, narrowing the lead to 3-2.
McCarty was stranded when Matt Lauderdale struck out to end the game.
Casey (2-2) picked up the win, allowing two runs with no walks while racking up eight strikeouts.
Ryan Mau (1-1) was the starter and loser for the Cougars, surrendering three runs, two earned on five hits over 7 2/3 innings.
He walked two and struck out four.
The Cougars finished off the Bucs in the final game of the series Sunday in a 5-4 win after rallying in the eighth inning with three hits to tie up the Bucs.
Matt Nunley (0-1) suffered the loss in relief for ETSU allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings.
