Mockingbird, a magazine showcasing ETSU students with artistic and literary talent, will hold a premiere party Thursday, in the Culp Center Common Grounds Coffee House from 7-9 p.m. to promote their 2001 issue.
Mockingbird 2001 is a team effort developed by the departments of English and art and design.
Some of the student work featured in the magazine includes work in visual and graphic arts, poetry, prose, fiction and nonfiction. The only requirement for eligibility is that contributors must be currently enrolled in ETSU.
The top works in each category are awarded cash prizes provided by the ETSU Foundation and Friends of the Reece Museum. Printing is possible through the generosity of the ETSU University Press and the Student Activities Allocation Committee which provides funding.
The university’s department of art and design announced April 10 that Patty Schmerbeck and Kevin Stephenson have been appointed as the director and assistant art director for Mockingbird 2001. Schmerbeck intends to graduate in spring 2001 with a BFA in graphic design. Stephenson is also majoring in graphic design. The two of them have worked on the 1999 Mockingbird issue that won two Addy Awards from the Tri-Cities Metro Advertising Federation for its art work.
More recently, Schmerbeck and Stephenson developed the cover art and the interior formats of Mockingbird 2001 in addition to determining the best presentation of student submissions in visual arts, poetry, prose and fiction.
Any student interested in submitting an entry can log onto their Web site at www.etsu.edu/english/mockingbird and view a printable submission form.
