Graduate students and other individuals interested in the toxicological effects of chemicals will soon have a unique opportunity to hear from national and international experts in the field.
On Oct. 18-19 at the Holiday Inn on Springbrook Drive in Johnson City, ETSU will join forces with Eastman Chemcial Company to host the annual meeting of the Southeastern Chapter of the Society of Toxicology (SOT).
Dr. Kenneth Ferslew, the president of the local SOT chapter and a professor at ETSU, stressed the adverse effects some chemicals may trigger on vital organ systems.
He went on to say that, “determining the extent of toxicities” between chemicals involved “the expertise of many professionals.”
Ferslew, who helped found the SOT in 1983 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, expects environmental, industrial and clinical toxicologists to be among those attending the meeting.
According to Ferslew, the symposium will include competitions for graduate students, where they will be able to present and discuss research.
A number of students from universities from Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina will be in the running for awards.
Further, established toxicologists will have the chance to present their own research for collaboration among their colleagues in an open platform.
The costs to attend the symposium are $20 for one night and $30 for both evenings.
Deadlines for abstracts for the poster or platform presentations is Sept. 24.
