As the nation mourns for the loss of victims in the terrorist attacks, the spirit of the Lady Bucs’ soccer team is wounded but not crushed.
The horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001, drove the Southern Conference including ETSU President Paul Stanton to meet on Thursday, canceling all games for the weekend of Sept. 16.
“They wanted to show that there’s a difference between college athletics and this tragedy,” head coach Heather Henson said.
Fortunately, the Lady Bucs are coping with the situation in a mature and impressive manner.
“Coming to practice is a release for the girls,” Henson said. “We have five girls from Maryland and Virginia.”
“We’ve held a training session for unity and the prayer service (held last Wednesday) was a huge starting point.”
Forgoing their game with Birmingham Southern, the team hopes for a home victory with Georgia Southern and Charleston this Friday and Sunday at the Liberty Bell Soccer field at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
As they put their 4-4-2 system into place, the girls will have to rely on speed, skill and unity to take the win for their first two conference games of the year.
If they depend on each other the way they have during this week, it will be no surprise when the girls make their hope for victory a reality.
