Students that are fearful of walking to and from classes or those who work at night on campus may not be aware of a free service offered and operated by the department of public safety.
An escort service is available that will provide protection and peace of mind for individuals walking to and from places on campus during the later hours of the evening, including all buildings and parking lots.
Members of the faculty or staff who may want a “protective eye” watching over them as they travel on the university’s campus may also use the service.
“It makes people feel more safe,” said Chief Larry Keplinger, director of public safety.
To obtain an escort, any member of the university community can call 439-6900. The operator will then dispatch an officer to escort the student or faculty/staff member anywhere on campus.
Those interested in the service who may be arriving on campus at a late hour can also drive up to the public safety building and request an escort from there.
Keplinger said there may be cases where it takes time for the escort to arrive.
“At times officers may be dealing with an emergency, we recommend the student remain patient and wait until we get there,” he said.
Although the service is not widely used by ETSU members, anyone who may feel unsafe about an area they must travel through is urged to contact the office for an escort.
For students who choose not to use this service, Michael Orr, administrative assistant for public safety, said, “Know where the emergency phones are if you need one.”
Lt. Terry Story said, “We recommend in campus police programs to go anywhere on campus in numbers. Have a buddy and stay in well-lit areas.”
