Ay Carumba!
Celebrating national Hispanic heritage month has never been as fun as it was at the “Fiesta!” in the Culp Center Atrium last Wednesday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the events included a medley of attention-grabbing activities as well as food and door goodies.
Students and faculty alike danced to their heart’s content and did the limbo and salsa.
Musician Brim Leal, an East Tennessean of Cuban heritage, provided some if the spectacular entertainment along with his talented musicians. Cultural diversity bags were handed out, and Hispanic candles were distributed, as well.
“This is the first year that an event like this has taken place,” said Laura Terry, director of Multicultural Affairs.
The goal of Multicultural Affairs is evident in the cultural awareness that the event attempted to bring to the students of ETSU.
“The main goal of Multicultural Affairs,” Terry said, is to create and foster a campuswide climate of respect for the diversity of people and thoughts.”
Many times students aren’t aware of months such as National Hispanic Month and miss the opportunity to learn something new about a different culture.
“An event such as this one will help different students begin to understand people that are not like them,” said Stephanie Joiner, assistant director of Multicultural Affairs.
A poster was created which displayed various members of the Latino community, all known for accomplishing different things.
Flags representing the vast number of Hispanic countries also decorated the massive poster.
Not only were students educated about a specific culture, but they also realized how many individual countries comprise this one cultural entity.
